Cathode copper production reached 15,500 tons (50 percent of the total figure) during April 21-May 21.

Last year, cathode copper production amounted to 213,500 tons, the report said.

It added that Sarcheshmeh Copper Complex has an annual production capacity of 158,000 tons, which will increase to 260,000 tons per year with the inauguration of the new projects.

The complex also plans to set up a 150,000-ton refinery.

Cathode copper is used in the metal casting plant of Sarcheshmeh Copper Complex. However, it may also be sold directly in the market.

Iran possesses the world's second largest copper reserves. At present, six copper mines are operating in the country.

China, Chile and India are the world's major copper producers while China, Japan and South Korea are the main copper consumers.

Iran is among the 15 mineral-rich countries exporting industrial and mineral products to 159 countries, including Iraq, China, UAE, India and Afghanistan.
