Baosteel produces first batch of pure titanium flat section ingot

Reading time: min

Baosteel Special Steel Business Unit conducted the authentication for the first batch of flat section ingot produced by the electron-beam cold hearth on March 11th.

The result shows that all various indices are well reached, which marks the success of the hot load test run of Baosteel's EBCH and the commencement of all-round production. This event has filled the gap of smelting pure titanium without flat section ingot in BSSB history and is a symbol that Baosteel has preliminary mastered the EBCH technology of the international top level, which also provides conditions for the demand of the national aerospace undertaking development for the critical materials.

The EBCH is contemporary the top-level process equipment for melting of pure titanium in the world. With the possibility of direct rolling, the flat section ingot produced by the EBCH offers more stable quality and performances at the same time to leave out such processes as forging the round ingot, blooming and so on, shortening the production flow and reducing the consumption as much as possible. At present, this technology has become the approval course as the authentication for special materials, mastered in the hands of the few enterprises in the world.

The construction of this electron-beam cold hearth was started in the second half of the year 2008. In the face of the complete new process equipment, The EBCH project team of BSSB strive to grope and explore the core technology with adventurous practice on the basis of importation and assimilation of the advanced technology from abroad, accumulating precious experience for the application of the technology. Meanwhile, the Self-consumption Branch of the Special Metallurgical Refinery organized its elites to participate in the production preparation during the erection period. They have got involved in the process commissioning since the very beginning, laying a solid foundation for the success of the hot load commissioning.
